Research

Problem

The average American now consumes twice as much as they did 50 years ago. Also, house size has more than doubled. With less than 5 percent of world population, the U.S. consume 30% of resources, also responsible for 30% of the world’s waste. Consumption leads to the direct creation of environmental pressures from the use of products and services.

Hypothesis

More consumptions is more produce and more negative impact on our environment. More possessions need to be taken care of — paid for, cleaned, stored, and maintained. Priorities change. Should not let something that was important to us a year ago dictate what’s important to us today. So, I ran prototype service called “Clutter Capsule” that a service helps people realize they don't need or even want everything they have.

User Flow

Focused on simple and easy process to users requests: 1. Request containers 2. Drop off containers 3. Place infrequently items 4. Evaluation time 5. Make a decision

Rapid Low and High-Fidelity Prototyping

Rapid prototyping quickly and cheaply also allow me to keep multiple concepts alive longer. With multiple prototypes, I can have an idea about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each.

Conclusion

Living with less, gives us more of what is the priority of our life and how decluttering affects our inner state and environment. Ultimately, it’s about having a more meaningful life.We can live the life we want to lead and focus on the priorities we choose.

We don’t become instantly happy by getting rid of our stuff - at least not in the long run. Decluttering is the first step. I hope Clutter Capsule is a guide that takes people along that important first step of letting go slowly.
